3 Ways to Make Money from Home

Are you tired of seeing all those online scams about working from home, but you really need a job that works with your schedule and needs? It is possible to get actual jobs that can be done from home (and aren't pyramid schemes!)....so read below to find out how!
STEPS
PART 1 OF 3: SUPPLEMENTING AN EXISTING INCOME
1
DO TASKS FOR WEBSITES. There are several websites, like Amazon's Mechanical Turk which will pay you a dollar or two to complete a basic, quick task. This can be a great way to make a couple of extra bucks in between homework assignments or to supplement a part-time job.
Jobs like these are usually intended for people overseas, in places where that amount of money goes a lot further. Don't be surprised about how little it pays. However, if you can't find other jobs that fit with your hours, this really isn't a bad option.
2
START A BLOG. Start a website, put ads on it, and start churning out content that will amuse people. You'll need to do some advertising and SEO (search engine optimization) in order to ensure that you get enough viewers to really make some money, but running a blog is very easy to do if you're a good, entertaining writer.
Make sure your blog covers something that you know a lot about, but that also covers something that's interesting to a fair number of people. You'll probably get a lot further with a blog on parenting advice than you will with a blog on 1980's model train re-paints.
3
TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE\'S PETS. If you've got a good set-up or location, you can make some quick extra cash by walking dogs or pet-sitting. Just make sure that the owners know if you're dealing with more than one animal at a time. Some dogs don't get along well with others.
You can begin by taking care of the pets of people you know. Once you've built up some references, advertise at your local grocery store. Once you've got a decent client base, you can always advertise online too, with websites like Yahoo or Craigslist.
4
TAKE CARE OF PEOPLE\'S HOUSES. You can also do something similar and take care of people's houses. Work part-time as a house cleaner or maid. Alternatively, some people are nervous about leaving their house alone if they go on a long vacation. Develop a good reputation with lots of references and you can get paid to live in people's houses!
Start by working for people you know, like friends and family. Build a reputation and then advertise online or around your neighborhood.
This may not be working from home in the traditional sense, but you will be able to make money while staying in _a_ home. It that way, it's better for college students than stay-at-home moms.
5
SELL PEOPLE\'S JUNK. Run garage sales for people (for a cut of the profit) or take free items from Craigslist, refurbish them, and then sell them. This can be a great way to make some supplemental cash. Start by working for family members and then advertise to do it for other people.
You can sell your own junk too. If you only need to make enough money to buy yourself a new Play Station, try combing through your own belongings and downsizing before taking on other people's things.
6
DO STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY. Stock photography is where you take high quality photos of all sorts of basic things and sell the rights to use those images to companies and websites. There are lots of websites that will buy your stock photos; all you need is a good camera and a good eye.
A point-and-shoot is, under most conditions, not a good camera.
7
WRITE ARTICLES. Websites like eHow and Listiverse will pay you a small amount to produce content for them. If you're a fast writer and you have an idea for some content, this can be a great way to make a few extra bucks.
PART 2 OF 3: GETTING A HOME-BASED CAREER
1
BECOME A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT. You can make money from home by being an assistant who works for one or more people over the internet. Your job will entail tasks that regular personal or corporate assistants do at an office. Quite a number of employers hire part time assistants to do errands such as typing documents, taking calls, and sending out marketing emails to clients. If you want to be a full time assistant, then you can take more than one client.
2
BECOME A FREELANCE WRITER. Another way to make money from home is to write online. There are a lot of work opportunities for freelance writers on the net. Many companies today rely on internet marketing and writers who can do SEO and web content for their websites. You can also blog for a living and earn from advertisers or blog for someone else and get paid a steady income each month. Online writers can also write news, e-books or act as ghost writers for their clients.
3
BECOME A TRANSCRIPTIONIST. There are lots of reasons that people may need documents digitally transcribed, from visually impaired people to doctors. You can find a job or make one for yourself by offering transcription services to everyone from graduate students to lawyers.
Keep in mind that for more specialized transcription, you may need to have a background in that field. Medical transcription and legal transcription are examples of this.
Since you will likely be paid by piece, you will need to be a very fast, accurate typist and reader. Practice!
4
BECOME A GRAPHICS OR WEB DESIGNER. Due to increasing needs to conduct business on the internet, the need for people who can create websites and graphics on the net also increases. This will be ideal for people with knowledge in various computer languages, graphics designing and image creating software, and programming. Stay up-to-date with the latest technology to make your talent in demand.
5
WRITE ACADEMIC PAPERS. There are lots of people, from middle school students to people working on their doctorate, who have more work than they can handle. You can get paid to do it for them! Writing other people's school papers can be a great way to make money if you're a good writer and willing to learn lots of different subjects. There are many companies that provide this service for which you can work if this is what you want to do.
It's technically legal for you, though less legal for your customers. If you're okay with that, then go right ahead.
6
BECOME A SOFTWARE ENGINEER. This is a job where you will be required to make entirely new (or fix or overhaul existing) pieces of software for companies or individuals. This requires quite a bit of skill and training, but if you're the kind of guy or gal that prefers working in your pajamas and not dealing with coworkers, it's great.
7
BECOME A MONEY PERSON. Financial adviser, accountant, tax assistant, you name it: people hate dealing with the boring parts of having money. If you've got a good head for numbers and you're willing to learn how to manage money effectively, starting a business or working for a company doing this kind of work can be great.
8
BECOME A TRANSLATOR. If you speak more than one language fluently, you're good as gold. You can easily get work translating documents, websites, books, and other written works into whatever languages you speak. This means actually being fluent in both languages though: four years of high school Spanish isn't going to work.
9
BECOME A DAYCARE PROVIDER. If you're a stay-at-home mom, you can create an at-home job by taking on a few more kids in addition to your own. Make sure to charge enough to cover your wage plus the money it costs you to care for the children (food, toys, etc). Just keep in mind that in most jurisdictions, you will need to get a license for this.
10
BECOME A TEACHER. If you have the qualifications, you can work as a teacher or professor at online schools and colleges. You can also, with fewer qualifications, work as a tutor for online schools or test prep services. There are a number of schools and services online, so check out all your options before taking a job.
PART 3 OF 3: STARTING A HOME BASED BUSINESS

1
IDENTIFY A SKILL YOU HAVE THAT COULD TRANSLATE INTO A HOME BASED BUSINESS. Not all jobs can be performed effectively from home so examine your strengths and experience to determine if you can make working from home effective for you and your family.
Assess how much money you need to make. Determine how much money you’ll need to make in order to live comfortably. In some cases, you may need to factor in overhead costs, initial cash outlay to get the business started and the amount of time it will take to turn a profit. Tally your monthly bills to help determine the total amount you should make and decide how much money you would like to add to your savings account.
Determine if you have the equipment/tools to make your home-based business a success. Knowing what you need in terms of tools should be included in the cost. In some cases a simple computer and certain software will do the trick. However, if you are running another type of business, such as an embroidery or catering company you may need to purchase certain equipment to get your home based business off the ground.
Decide if you need assistance or if you can perform this task as a one man or woman show. Another cost to consider is whether you can do this on your own or if assistance will be required. For example, if you are starting a house painting company you may need to hire one or two employees to help you complete larger jobs.
Find a specific space in your home that you can call your “office.” Even if you plan to do most of your business in the field, you’ll need to have your own space for paperwork and invoicing. Whether it’s the kitchen table or you can allot for an entire room for an office, identify a space before you begin work.

2
LEARN HOW TO CREATE AN ORGANIZED DAY. Being self motivated is the key to being an effective “at home” worker. If you aren’t already an organized person you’ll have a rough road ahead. Use organizational tools and a solid day planner to keep you focused on your schedule.
Obtain a comprehensive planner or use the organizational system software on your computer. No one else is going to keep you on track so you’ll need to write down every appointment and/or deadline in your planner. Avoid trying to just “remember” because you will only set yourself up for failure.
Examine your day to determine which hours you will work. If you are a busy parent and need to leave the house throughout the day to drop off or pick up children, identify quiet hours during the day that you can dedicate to work. It may be possible that you’ll have to work well into the evening if you are busy with childcare during the day.
Create an organizational system that will help you stay on top of work/clients. If you are juggling numerous clients, create a filing system that makes sense to you. In some cases, placing all paperwork and information in one large folder per client may help, whereas pinning information to a corkboard in your office regarding that client may work.
Set up a professional invoicing system and send invoices either bi-monthly or monthly. Use your computer software’s invoicing templates or you can create an invoice using Excel. Decided when you plan to bill and be sure you send invoices on the same day of the month to ensure consistent payment. Institute a 10 day late policy, if possible, to make sure payment is received promptly.

3
ACTIVELY PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS AND SEEK CLIENTS. Even if you are going into your home business with a few clients, you may want to beef up your company with additional interest. In a topsey turvey economy you can never tell when one client may bail.
Social media. Promote relevant information on social media channels--especially news or interesting information that would spark conversation. For example, if you are running an organic food catering business from home, post articles about the benefits of organic food or offer an easy recipe.
Traditional advertising. While traditional advertising has its place, TV, radio and print can be expensive. Instead, consider using flyers or posting your business card at stores or places you visit.
Networking. Join the local Chamber of Commerce or industry groups to attract new clients. For example, if you are a financial blogger, hit the bank and credit union expo or marketing seminars to build your network.
Scanning online classifieds. Places like Zaarly or Craigslist may offer some leads, however consider Googling your profession. For example, if you are a writer, Google “writer jobs” or “writing jobs” for job boards.

4
MAKE A REALISTIC SCHEDULE THAT WORKS FOR YOU. Some home-based businesses are based in the field whereas other home businesses require work output through the computer. Regardless of what kind of home based business you run, you need to understand that the days of three hour lunches on the company dime are over. You are in charge, which means you alone dictate if you are going to make money or not.
Weekends and holidays may not be possible. Believe it or not you may need to review an order on a Saturday night or after Thanksgiving dinner. Most independently owned, home based business revolves around delivering the product on deadline--if that deadline falls on a Monday or the day after a holiday you may need to work when everyone is off.
Nights and working while on vacation are a reality. Even during vacation you may still need to work, so be ready to be accessible by phone or email.
Be available to your clients 24/7 to stay ahead of the competition. Regardless of your business, you will need to differentiate yourself from the pack. That means being accessible constantly and going the extra mile to deliver a highly superior product. Your want your clients to completely trust and rely upon you, never failing to meet a deadline.
Continuously learn and integrate new skills into your business. Another way to get ahead of the competition is to constantly be learning new skills or ways to enhance your business. Take courses or webinars to expand your horizons.
TIPS
Give your home based business time to take off--building a new client base doesn’t happen overnight so cut yourself some slack and give it time.
Most home-based jobs are done through the internet, but you can also make money from home even if you’re not tech savvy by running a day care at home. It is important for you to find a home-based job that you are happy with and are also good at so you can earn a significant amount that can sustain your lifestyle.
WARNINGS
Working from home has tax implications. Consult with a tax advisor about what you can and cannot deduct and how to approach paying taxes on your earnings.

How to Start a Bookstore: 8 Steps

Starting a bookstore can provide a great opportunity for you to turn your passion into your livelihood. Small, independent bookstores can prove to be quite successful, and will enrich their surrounding community. While it can be intimidating and quite challenging to start a business and compete against the big retailers, by following a few steps you can learn how to start a bookstore.
STEPS
1
DO YOUR RESEARCH. Study the retail markets in your area, especially booksellers. Determine if the market will support an additional business, and what niches might be unexplored. Talk to other small business owners in the area; use their information to decide how your business might best be structured to address the available markets. Ask friends or even conduct a poll about what community members would want to see in a new bookstore.
2
PUT TOGETHER A BUSINESS PLAN. A business plan is a formal document describing your proposed venture; it will state your goals, why you think those goals are achievable, and how you plan to reach them. You will be pitching your business plan primarily to lenders and investors, so financing your endeavor will depend on putting together a solid business plan. A business plan has many key components.
Be sure to include a good executive summary. The executive summary presents an overview of your entire business in just 1 page. If you don't impress your reader with the executive summary, they may not even read the rest of the business plan.
Include a solid marketing plan. This is likely the most important part of the business plan. The marketing plan demonstrates to your reader that you have analyzed your target market and that you understand the market. Include details about your product, your distribution strategy, your pricing scheme, and your marketing budget.
Don't neglect the financial documents. Lenders and investors look at this section first. Include 3 years worth of projected balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Prove to investors that they can see a quick return, and show lenders that you are not a risk for default.
3
FIND A LOCATION. Finding a good rental space is essential to running a successful business. Make sure your bookstore is located in an area with a lot of pedestrian traffic, if possible. Be sure to comply with local zoning ordinances (in general, you will need a property zoned for commercial usage). Pay attention to how much tenant improvement (TI) you will have to do, such as installing bookshelves and a counter.
4
OBTAIN FINANCING. Determine how much start-up capital you will need, and then formulate a plan to get that money. This money will come from 3 primary sources: yourself, investors, and lenders. Achieving a balance between these 3 sources is crucial to the financial health of your business.
Prepare to put some of your own money into the business. Lenders like to see this, because it shows them you have a vested interest in not defaulting on your loans.
Attract money from investors. Get in touch with friends or venture capitalists and convince them that your business is a promising investment. When investors give you money, they establish equity in your business, meaning they become part owners. You are not obligated to pay them back if the business flops, but they will expect a high return in exchange for shouldering that risk.
Get a bank loan. There are plenty of small business loan programs available. Loans have the benefit of costing less than equity (the interest rates will be lower than an investor's expected return), but you are obligated to pay them back.
Note that there is actually such a thing as having too much start-up capital. If you have wads of money, you will generally be more reckless in spending it and won't pay enough attention to market signals.
5
MAKE YOUR BUSINESS LEGAL. This means applying for a business license, and deciding on your legal business form. If you incorporate, your personal assets will not be at stake, but your income will be taxed both as corporate and personal income. If you operate as a sole proprietorship, you risk losing even your personal assets (like your car or home).
6
STOCK YOUR BOOKSTORE. Order books from suppliers and publishers and start filling your shelves. If you are running a used bookstore, look for deals on book collections online, at estate sales, or even at yard sales. Make sure your stock of books aligns with the market niche you indicated you would explore in your business plan.
7
ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS. Prior to opening, make sure people in the surrounding community know about your new bookstore. Consider printing fliers, putting ads or coupons in the local newspapers, advertising online, or holding a grand opening sale. Make sure to take advantage of social media technologies to spread the word about your new store.
8
CONSIDER OFFERING OTHER SERVICES AT YOUR BOOKSTORE. Schedule book readings and book signings. Offer classes or seminars on topics appropriate to your bookstore's niche. Consider opening a small cafe in your bookstore. All these options are a good way to bring in revenue while distinguishing your store from the big retail chains.
TIPS
You could consider opening an online bookstore. This will save you money on rental space, as you will only need inventory space.

How to Buy Gold Jewelry: 6 Steps (with Pictures)

Whether you are shopping for a special occasion or treating yourself, purchasing gold jewelry can be a delightful experience. Gold is a precious metal that retains its value. It is also durable and will last indefinitely with proper care. However, buying gold jewelry can also be expensive. The price of gold varies greatly, depending on weight, karat and where you make your purchase. Because this special purchase is an investment that can last a lifetime, learning how to buy gold jewelry will help you find quality pieces that will bring years of enjoyment.
STEPS

1
RESEARCH AND UNDERSTAND THE KARAT AMOUNTS IN GOLD JEWELRY AND HOW THAT WILL AFFECT THE PRICE AND DURABILITY OF EACH PIECE YOUR ARE CONSIDERING FOR PURCHASE.
Gold is measured in karats, with 24 karat gold being pure. However, gold in its purest form is soft, so it is commonly mixed with base metals such as copper, silver, nickel or zinc to make jewelry.
For example, 10 karat gold is 10 parts gold and 14 parts base metal. Most jewelry is made in 10, 14 and 18 karat measurements. Higher karat weights are more expensive, and also softer.

2
FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH KARAT MARKINGS. Most pieces of gold jewelry are stamped with the specific karat quality, called a hallmark.
The hallmark is usually found on the inside part of each piece, and will indicate the gold content. For example, 14k for 14 karat gold.

3
CONSIDER THE WEIGHT OF GOLD AND HOW THAT EFFECTS THE COST AND DURABILITY BEFORE PURCHASING GOLD JEWELRY.
Gold jewelry is usually weighed in grams. The higher the gram weight, the more expensive the piece.
Heavier, thicker pieces of gold jewelry also withstand daily wear and tear, especially in rings and bracelets.

4
DECIDE ON THE COLOR OF GOLD JEWELRY YOU PREFER BEFORE SHOPPING FOR GOLD JEWELRY.
Though yellow gold is very popular, you can also find gold jewelry in white, rose and even designer colors such as brown, green and blue.

5
VISIT DIFFERENT SHOPS TO FIND PIECES YOU MAY WANT TO BUY.
Though jewelry stores are the most common places to shop for gold jewelry, nice pieces can also be found in pawn shops and by shopping online.

6
ASK THE JEWELRY OR SALESPERSON ABOUT RETURN POLICIES AND CERTIFICATES OF AUTHENTICITY WHEN PURCHASING GOLD JEWELRY.
This will protect you as the consumer should you need to return your jewelry.
In addition, having a certificate of authenticity ensures that you are purchasing a quality piece of solid gold jewelry. It should also indicate the value of the piece.
TIPS
Jeweler's scales are available to check the weight of gold pieces. If you are shopping for gold jewelry at pawn or thrift shops, consider purchasing a jeweler's scale to take along with you to help you to determine gold weight and the appropriate prices.
When learning how to buy gold jewelry, keep in mind that higher karat quality makes the pieces more vulnerable to damage with regular wear. Pieces such as rings and bracelets that are likely to be bumped and scratched are sturdier when purchased in 14 or 10 karat gold.
Gold jewelry may also be plated or filled. Keep in mind that this is a coating of gold over base metal, and is not solid gold jewelry. Solid gold refers to any piece that is of a specific karat weight.
WARNINGS
It is not required by law for gold jewelry to have a karat quality stamp or hallmark. If your selection is not stamped, ask the salesperson or jewelry to guarantee that it is solid gold. Do not purchase the piece if you have concerns about its authenticity.
When shopping for gold rings, do not purchase pieces that have very thin bands. Wear and tear can cause breakage on delicate pieces worn on the hand.

How to Prepare a Grocery List on Your Laptop Computer: 5 Steps

Placing a grocery list on your PC will allow you to track your costs and keep a running balance. This procedure will work for a spreadsheet created in Microsoft Excel™. This will teach you how to set up a dynamic grocery list, not how to use a spreadsheet program.
STEPS

1
CREATE YOUR HEADINGS.
Cell A1 should be titled "Item".
Cell B1 should be titled "Price".
Cell C1 should be titled "Quantity".
Cell D1 should be titled "Total/Item".
Cell E1 should be titled "Grand Total".
2
FORMAT COLUMNS B, D, AND E FOR TWO DECIMAL PLACES IN CURRENCY.
In cell D2, enter the formula " =B2C2 "

In cell E2, enter the formula = D2

In cell E3, enter the formula = E2 + D3

In cell D2, grab the bottom right hand corner. You should see the icon change to a cross. Without releasing, pull down about 100 spaces. If you move to the right, just move back over to the "D" column. This will put the formula in all of the places you made dark.

3
IN CELL E
3
, NOT E2, FOLLOW THE SAME PROCEDURE, BRINGING THE FORMULA DOWN AS FAR AS YOU DID IN COLUMN "D". As you have not entered any numbers in yet, columns D and E should have numerous zeros listed.

4
SAVE THIS SPREADSHEET AS "GROCERY_MASTER" OR ANY OTHER NAME.

5
OPEN ANYTIME YOU NEED IT, BUT GIVE EACH NEW LIST A UNIQUE NAME TO PROTECT YOUR ORIGINAL TEMPLATE.
TIPS
This works for other spreadsheet programs, such as OpenOffice.org Calc.
WARNINGS
Always test new programs, such as spreadsheet programs, to ensure they work properly.
This program does not compute sales tax. Sales tax is determined differently depending on where you live.
THINGS YOU\'LL NEED
Spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel

How to Install Joomla on 1and1

How to build a website using Joomla on the web-hosting company called 1and1. Initially reproduced from the 1and1 help-page http://faq.1and1.com/web_space__access/ftp_account/14.html with kind permission of the 1and1 customer support on 2012-02-02, 19:29 GMT
This is a work-in-progress initially taken from the 1and1 guide with kind permission of their Customer Services. Over time the article hopes to become more neutral and have other similar articles to help people with other web-hosting services.
STEPS
1
DOWNLOAD AND SAVE THE LATEST FULL PACKAGE VERSION OF JOOMLA! from the Joomla! download page to your computer. It is suggested to save this file to your Desktop so it can be easily found.
2
DOUBLE-CLICK THE ZIP FILE DOWNLOADED TO OPEN THE ZIP FILE.
3
CLICK THE EXTRACT ALL FILES BUTTON.
4
SELECT A DESTINATION WHERE THE FILES WILL BE STORED AFTER UNZIPPING. If you saved the file to your Desktop, the default destination will be a new folder on your Desktop which is ideal. Click the Extract button.
It may take a few minutes to extract all the files.
You should see that a new Joomla folder exists now that you have uncompressed the ZIP file. It is best to rename the folder similar to the website that will be using Wordpress.
5
RIGHT-CLICK THE FOLDER AND THEN CHOOSE RENAME.
In this example, rename the folder to 1and1help.
6
UPLOAD THE FOLDER TO THE ROOT OF YOUR WEB-SPACE VIA FTP.
Now that the folder has been uploaded, you will have to ensure that the domain points to this folder. You must log into the 1&1 Control Panel and change the destination folder for the domain to the folder you just uploaded. To edit destination, please reference How do I set up or change a destination for the domain?
7
PLEASE NOTE: it may take ~15 minutes until the domain will point at the correct folder after making changes.
8
OPEN A BROWSER AND ACCESS YOUR DOMAIN. In this example, the domain is http://1and1help.com/
9
WHEN THE DOMAIN POINTS TO THE CORRECT FOLDER, YOU SHOULD SEE THE JOOMLA! installation page. If you receive a message that you need PHP5 to run Joomla!:
Click the Start Menu and click Run.
Type notepad and press ENTER
Write !AddType x-mapp-php5 .php in the text file and save it as htaccess.txt
Upload the file to the folder that holds your Joomla! files
Using your FTP program, rename the file to .htaccess. You must include the period before the file-name.
Reload the web-page.
10
SELECT YOUR LANGUAGE AND THEN CLICK THE NEXT BUTTON.
11
JOOMLA! will perform a Pre-Installation Check to make sure that requirements are met and display whether the recommended settings are already in place. Display Errors may be Enabled which is not the recommended setting but it is best to keep this enabled for now. This will display any PHP errors, which may help you resolve any complications during the install and initial setup of your Joomla! site.
12
CLICK THE NEXT BUTTON.
You will need to accept the GNU General Public License for Joomla! in order to install it. Click the Next button if you agree with the terms.
13
NOW YOU WILL NEED TO FILL OUT THE MYSQL DATABASE INFORMATION SO THAT JOOMLA! knows which database to store the site data in. Please reference How do I create a new MySQL database? to create a new database or to find out where the database info is kept in the 1&1 Control Panel.
14
FILL OUT THE DATABASE INFO. The Table Prefix is used to differentiate one Joomla! install from another in cases where you are using one database for multiple Joomla! sites (which is not recommended). You can leave the auto-generated Table Prefix or write in your own. Click the Next button when you have finished entering the database details.
15
SKIP THE FTP CONFIGURATION FOR THE TIME BEING BY CLICKING THE NEXT BUTTON.
16
ENTER A SITE NAME, SUPPLY YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS AND CREATE A USERNAME AND PASSWORD.
17
IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME USING JOOMLA! you may want to click the Install Sample Data button so that after Joomla! installs you can view a sample site.
18
CLICK THE NEXT BUTTON WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED.
19
AFTER JOOMLA! installs, click the Remove installation folder
20
IF THE INSTALLATION FOLDER COULD NOT BE REMOVED, YOU CAN SIMPLY DELETE THE INSTALLATION FOLDER VIA FTP.
21
YOU ARE NOW FINISHED AND CAN VIEW THE JOOMLA! site or log in to the Admin section.

4 Ways to Shop for Antiques in New England

When we think of New England, we often think of the ocean, a lobster dinner and antique shops. "Antiquing" is the process of shopping for antiques or collectibles. You will find an abundance of antique shops in the New England area, from local dealers to historic houses.
STEPS
1
RESEARCH NEW ENGLAND AREAS ONLINE OR THROUGH LOCAL TRAVEL BUREAUS FOR THE BEST ANTIQUING LOCATIONS. Map out a route using paper maps or a GPS (Global Positioning System.)
2
CONSIDER SUCH LOCATIONS AS WOODBURY, CONNECTICUT, KNOWN AS THE ANTIQUE CAPITAL OF CONNECTICUT. It stretches along Route 5 and has over 30 antique dealers who carry items from all periods, and in all price ranges.
METHOD 1 OF 4: MASSACHUSETTS
1
BOSTON IS A PREFERRED LOCATION FOR THOSE ANTIQUE SEEKERS WHO ALSO ENJOY THE BIG CITY ENVIRONMENT. Travel down Charles Street in Beacon Hill for a unique antiquing experience, where you can find furniture and collectibles located next to up-scale restaurants and high-end boutiques.
METHOD 2 OF 4: NEW HAMPSHIRE
1
TRAVELING FURTHER UP THE MAP IS "ANTIQUE ALLEY", LOCATED IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. It is known as one of the most popular antique shopping areas in New England. It extends through the towns of Northwood, Lee, Epsom and Chichester and has more than 500 dealers. There are also shops located outside of the "alley" nearby on Route 4.
METHOD 3 OF 4: VERMONT
1
ALMOST EVERY TOWN IN VERMONT BOASTS OF AN ANTIQUE SHOP. Many are small and quaint, but abound with endless treasures. Check web directories for towns you will be traveling near. There are over 30,000 shops listed in local directories for the Vermont area.
METHOD 4 OF 4: MAINE
1
MAINE IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS SELECTION OF ANTIQUE SHOPS AND PROVIDES ONE OF THE FINEST ANTIQUING EXPERIENCES IN THE UNITED STATES. Maine also offers a unique experience of viewing antiques in their traditional settings such as historic homes and inns.
TIPS
Consider starting a blog to highlight your own antiquing experiences and network with others. There are numerous ways to start a free blog online.
Use online directories and other websites to view images of antiques available at specific locations. Keep a list of those you are especially interested in to save time on your trip.
Use Google Maps to find exact locations of shops once you have decided on towns you wish to visit. These are clickable maps that allow you to obtain specific directions and often take you directly to a store's website.
Consider other excursions while on your antiquing trip. New England is well known for quiet, little-known destinations and National Parks.
Investigate Historical Society sites for each state that you wish to visit for information on antique shops and other historical interests.
Check Social Networking sites for groups of antique enthusiasts. This is a great opportunity to determine the best locations and the honest dealers.

How to Cook Food in a Hotel Room (with Examples)

Lots of travelers, particularly those on business, find themselves stuck in hotels for weeks or months on end. The novelty of eating every meal at a restaurant or room service soon wears off, and the traveler craves nothing more than the taste of a home-cooked meal. However, in-room resources at many hotels appear to be incapable of facilitating cooking. This can be resolved through several innovative ways.
STEPS
COOKING HELP

Hotel Appliance Cooking List

Sample Recipe for Hotel Meal
METHOD 1 OF 2: BREAKFAST

1
MAKE OATMEAL in the coffee maker. Put two packets of instant oatmeal into the carafe. Add an individual packet of honey, an individual packet of fruit jam, and a pinch of salt. Put an herbal tea bag (e.g. orange flavored) into the filter basket. Pour 8-
1
0 ounces of water into the coffee maker, turn on the machine, and the oatmeal will be ready in about 5 minutes.[
1
]
Even old-fashioned (non-instant) oatmeal can be cooked either with hot water or in a microwave.
No honey? Try cut-up fresh or dried fruit. Raisins, apples, strawberries, and many other choices all add enough sweetness and they tend to be widely available in shops.
2
COOK BACON with the iron. Cut bacon strips in half and place them between two foil sheets. Crimp the edges of the foil sheets together to prevent grease from spilling out. Iron the bacon, opening the packet carefully with a fork every few minutes to check to see if the bacon is done and to let out the steam. It'll take about 10 minutes to get slightly crisp bacon.[
2
]
3
USE THE IRON AS A HOTPLATE FOR EGGS. Prop the iron so that the ironing surface is horizontal. Make a little foil pan and grease it with bacon fat or butter. Crack one or two eggs into it, wait 7-10 minutes (until the eggs hold together), then flip them over to cook on the other side.[2]

4
PREPARE SOFT-BOILED EGGS IN THE COFFEE MAKER. Place the eggs carefully into the carafe and let the hot water drip over them. Then let the eggs sit in the water for a few minutes.[3]
METHOD 2 OF 2: LUNCH/DINNER

1
PREPARE RAMEN NOODLES in the coffee maker. Put the noodles in the carafe. Add enough water to submerge the noodles and turn the coffee maker on. After the water runs through the coffee maker, let the noodles soak in it for about three minutes, or however long it takes for the noodles to soften. Then drain carefully and add the seasoning.[4]
2
MAKE A GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH USING THE IRON. You can also use the same method to make a quesadilla.[5] There is also the dessert version of grilled cheese, using peanut butter and chocolate chips.
3
USE THE IRON AS A SKILLET/GRILL. Wrap chicken, fish, vegetables, etc. in foil, place the foil-wrapped food on the ironing board, and put the iron, on the highest setting, over the top. Just make sure the foil is sealed so that juices don't come out and ruin the iron or the surface you're cooking on. The more cooking that the food requires, the less room there is for error, so try to stick with food that only needs searing, such as scallops.

4
USE THE COFFEE MAKER AS A VEGETABLE STEAMER. Place carrots, broccoli, etc. in the filter basket of the coffee maker. Run water through the coffee maker several time to achieve desired tenderness.
5
MAKE INSTANT RICE IN THE COFFEE MAKER. Run the appropriate amount of water, per the instructions on the rice package, through the coffee maker and then add the rice to the coffee pot. Leave the burner on until the rice has thoroughly cooked and absorbed most of the water.
6
MAKE SAUCE IN THE COFFEE MAKER. Sauces and fondues can be made by running water through the coffee maker and adding the heated water to a sauce mix. You should not run anything other than water through the coffee maker. These machines are made to heat water only, and the water comes into direct contact with the heating element. Sauces will burn onto the heating element, ruining the coffee maker.
7
MAKE "LEMON PEPPER CHICKEN" IN THE COFFEE MAKER. Place chicken breast in coffee maker. Add enough water to cover about 1/4 of chicken. Sprinkle with lemon pepper seasoning. Turn on maker and cook about 15 min per side. Add milk and butter to remaining liquid, allow to heat for about a minute, and add potato flakes for a quick side of mashed potatoes.
8
KEEP UNCOOKED OPTIONS IN MIND. You can make a salad easily, by washing the ingredients in the bathroom sink, and you can make your own sandwiches from supermarket ingredients or, in many cases, buy ready-made.
VIDEO
{{{1}}}
TIPS
After you're finished with the coffee maker, clean it thoroughly.
These tactics may also prove helpful to a college student living in a dorm with strict regulations.
Plates, cups, utensils, and condiments can often be obtained if your hotel has a breakfast buffet.
For lighter fare when traveling, or to reduce your budget, aim for one larger restaurant meal per day. Lunch is ideal, because it is often lighter and less costly to order in a restaurant than dinner, and it is when you are most likely to be away from your hotel. For your restaurant meal, choose foods you cannot prepare as easily for yourself. Then, prepare simple, lighter meals for morning and night. Eggs, bread, and hot or cold cereal are relatively easy breakfasts to prepare on the go, and sandwiches, canned soups, and prepared foods can combine to make simple dinners.
Use the ice bucket as a salad bowl, but clean and disinfect thoroughly first. Ice buckets can harbor plenty of bacteria.
You should first practice at home.
If you want to cook for yourself, plan ahead a little. See if you can find a hotel, hostel, or extended stay place that has some cooking facilities. Many hotels do offer microwaves, toaster ovens, and even mini-fridges in the rooms. Many hostels offer communal kitchens. Long-term stay places have studio apartments with kitchenettes. Any of these options expands considerably the range of cooking options you will have available.
WARNINGS
KEEP IN MIND THAT COOKING IN HOTEL ROOMS USUALLY VIOLATES MOST HEALTH CODES. If you get caught cooking in a hotel room, you may have to pay fines, replace appliances, and/or be evicted from the hotel. You are far better off booking a hotel room that has a kitchenette (microwave, fridge, stove/oven, etc.) than attempting anything outlined in this article.
If you ruin something that the hotel owns, the hotel will charge a LOT to replace the broken item. So be careful!=
While cooking, do not leave electric devices unattended even for a short time.
Be aware that the hot iron does present a fire hazard. Make sure to use extra caution and never let children cook alone.
Clean out the coffee pot and filter before attempting to cook with it. You don't want your steamed cauliflower to taste like three week old coffee!
If the coffee pot has a dark, reddish-orange stain, it might've been used to brew methamphetamine, and the resulting coffee could be hazardous to your health. If there's a chemical smell in the room, that's another red flag.
You're really supposed to ask the hotel permission if you can do this (to which they'll probably say no).
Do not allow any uncleaned surface or appliance to contact food which you intend to eat.
After use, thoroughly clean anything -- especially the coffee maker and iron -- which has contacted raw poultry or meat, as failure to do this may result in salmonella.

How to Begin Tatting: 7 Steps (with Pictures)

Tatting is an old craft used to make a type of lace. Tatting has experienced numerous periods of popularity, including during Victorian times and the 1950s and 60s. The English name of tatting is said to be derived from "tatters" and to denote the frail disconnected character of the fabric.[1] In recent years, it has been revived again with great enthusiasm. Tatting can be a very fulfilling hobby - it is easy to learn (contrary to how you might feel when viewing the incredible complexity of designs that result from tatting projects) and there are a vast array of projects available to the avid tatter. Tatting designs are elegant, dainty and useful in one - tatting projects include doilies, runners, collars, table covers, handkerchiefs, pillow edgings and more. If you're just starting out with tatting, this article aims to provide the basic overview before embarking on a project.
STEPS

1
FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE THREADS USED FOR TATTING. Suitable threads include crochet cotton and mercerized cotton. DMC is one popular brand known for its tatting threads. Threads can be purchased online as well as in craft stores. (NOTE: When teaching someone to tat, I accidently found if you use two colors of thread, one in the bobbin and another for the ball, you can quickly see if an error has been made. When done correctly, the work should all be one color. If you see two colors, you know somethings was done wrong.)

2
OBTAIN SOME TATTING SHUTTLES. Old shuttles used to be made of bone, tortoiseshell, Bakelite or steel. Modern shuttles are made from plastic. You may be able to collect older versions, although obtaining tortoiseshell shuttles can be difficult due to endangered species regulations. Start with modern ones and if you get a passion for tatting, you might even discover a passion for collecting old shuttles for display!

3
LEARN HOW TO WIND THE SHUTTLE. Wind the thread around the bobbin that is situated in the center of the shuttle. If there is a hole in the center of the shuttle, insert the thread through the hole and tie a knot before commencing your project. Note that in some instances, the bobbin is removable. Do not wind the thread beyond the edge of the shuttle.

4
PRACTICE USING THE SHUTTLE. This is explained in illustrated detail at Use a Tatting Shuttle. A brief outline is provided here for the sake of completeness.
Take a shuttle with a pointed end and 2 balls of mercerized cotton. Wind as described above.
Take the shuttle in the right hand, between the thumb and second finger, and allow the forefinger to remain at liberty.
Rest the under side of the shuttle between the second and third and on the middle finger.
Place the thread round the three middle fingers of the left hand, so as to form a loop, keeping the second and third fingers a little apart, and bring the cotton again between the thumb and forefinger, letting the end fall within the palm of the hand, while the end of cotton which holds on to the shuttle passes over the thumb-nail.

5
TRY A VARIETY OF TATTING STITCHES. Once you have familiarized yourself with the above information, commence with the basic stitches, such as double stitch, rings, chains etc. This will get you used to how tatting feels and establish your own manner before you embark on projects.

6
UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE REVERSE WORK. In tatting you will notice that the rounded end of the loop on which you are working faces the top. However, you can produce an interesting effect by turning your work first up and then down. The directions will say "rw" (reverse work). To do this, once you have worked a ring, turn it so that the base of the ring faces the top and the new ring is worked as usual with the loop side up.

7
START YOUR FIRST TATTING PROJECT. Start with edgings and insertions first. Check out wikiHow's Tatting category for many ideas.
TIPS
If you use two colors of thread, one in the bobbin and another for the ball, you can quickly see if an error has been made. When done correctly, the work should all be one color. If you see two colors, you know somethings was done wrong.
Learn the relevant tatting abbreviations:
_r_ - ring
_lr_ - large ring
_sr_ - small ring
_ds_ - double stitch
_p_ - picot
_lp_ - long picot
_sm p_ - small picot
_sep._ - separated
_cl_ - close
_rw_ - reverse work
_sp_ - space
_ch_ - chain
Tatting differs entirely from crochet, and is composed of stitches forming knots. It is intended to be an imitation of point lace, and it is often used for trimming under linen, on account of its strength.
If collecting old tatting shuttles is a passion with you, note that some were made from ivory and tortoiseshell. When you collect these, ensure that they are VINTAGE and obtain them LEGALLY from antique specialists only. Do not purchase new ivory or tortoiseshell, as this breaches the laws on protecting endangered species and encourages illegal poaching of disappearing species. Other older forms of shuttles include bone, mother-of-pearl or even wood with inlaid designs. Collecting shuttles can be an enjoyable pastime for the vintage sewing enthusiast.
Note that "purl" is sometimes the term used to refer to a Josephine picot or knot. In many Victorian-era patterns, it is used to indicate a picot.

How to Become a Pixel Artist: 5 Steps (with Pictures)

Pixel Art is a form of electronic art created using a computer and a drawing software. It's associated with creating a picture by filling it in, pixel by pixel, rather than using graphic tools. In this guide, we will be using MS paint, available on any Windows computer (3.0x and up) to create your very own pixel images.
STEPS

1
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH COLORS. Color is one of the most important parts of your image in terms of effect. Even black-white images have different shades of gray, which can be counted as color. In MS paint, as in most graphics programs, an advanced color picker is available. Let's call it RGB/HSL box. So, to open up RGB/HSL box, just double click any color, or click "colors" and select "edit colors" from the menu bar. Click "Define Custom Colors". Here, you see 6 text boxes: Hue, Sat, Lum and Red, Blue, Green. After experimenting with each, you will be able to figure out what they do. You can also change those values by moving the "target" on around a big color map and by moving the black arrow up and down, you can change the luminosity of the color. Experiment with the RGB/HSL box and then move on to next step.

2
LEARN TO DITHER. Dithering is a technique that blends your colors together, making them look smoother, or just creating interesting textures. There are 3 types of dithering: Basic dithering, stylized dithering and anti-aliasing. You will only learn basic dithering here, but it is easy to learn other two thereafter.
Basic dithering is a 2x2 checkerboard pattern that is created outside of the color to make it blend with the other, lighter color (or darker) color. You can practice dithering by applying more or less to the image. See what the results look like.

Once you master basic dithering, you can move on to stylized dithering, which instead of a checkerboard pattern, creates a random pattern of dots held together. It is used to create textures and more effects.

Anti-aliasing is used on lines to make them smoother. You will not need it in basic pixel art, although sometimes it can be useful.

3
PRACTICE SHADING AND LIGHTING. When shading objects, you must always consider the lighting point, or sun. Once you decide where it is, imagine that object is in real life and shade it the way it would be shaded in real life. Decrease lum value of a color by
3
0 and increase hue by 5 and shade the area in. Then, dither it so the colors blend. Now, modify the shaded color: decrease lum value by
3
0 and increase hue by 10. Shade the area inside the shaded area; however, make it small, like 2 pixels or so. Then, dither. Now, depending on what material you're drawing (shiny or not), you need to add in lighting. This is done by increasing original color by 40 or 50 (whichever one looks better) and drawing a line or a little circle opposite from the shaded areas. It has to be about 2 pixels away from the outline and it should look real. Again, use dithering to fit it in.

4
DRAW LINE ART. Line art is the main part of your objects: it's the outline. Think of an object. Then, zoom in and draw the object, pixel by pixel. The only way you can get better at line art is if you practice a lot. Now, you can start colouring in the image using your techniques.

5
SAVE YOUR MASTERPIECE. PNG and GIF formats are preferable over JPEG because they preserve the colors efficiently, rather than creating a "muddy" look. Whereas a BMP would preserve the image, it does not compress it at all and could have a very big file size.
TIPS
Look at other pixel art works. Paste them in Paint, zoom in and see how they're made. Study them to learn about new techniques but don't plagiarize.
Learn photo manipulation. Use a photo you took yourself or get permission to use someone else's photo. Paste the photo in Paint and make it smaller. Then, outline it. After that, erase the entire inside. Re-shade it so it looks pixelish.
A great way to test out pixel art is to find out the resolution of your mobile phone screen. You can find this out in your manual or even on the phone websites.
Animations can be created in Photoshop and Gimp, which can also be played on mobile phones, msn and blogs.
Isometric pixel art is used to provide a 3-dimensional view without actual 3-dimensional processing. Objects are drawn from 26-30 degree angle although some isometric works are drawn from a 90 degree angle.
Try to make SAT values of your colors under 150 because above 150, your colors start to look too bright.
You don't have to use ms paint to create pixel art. You can use programs such as Photoshop, Gimp 2 OR for mac Pixen. Most companies that use pixel art (eg, mobile phone games) use photoshop purely for the speed. A tint can be applied over a piece of work rather than changing every single pixel to a different colour eg for water.
K.I.S.S! Keep it simple, stupid! Keep the number of colours to a minimum. Pixel art is created for devices with low processing power so the more info in the file, the harder the device has to work.
Be creative.

4 Ways to Make a Duct Tape Purse

If you want to make a big statement at your next party, a duct tape purse is just the ticket. Duct tape purses are a cheap and easy way to stand out from the crowd, and making accessories with duct tape has become surprisingly trendy. Follow these steps to learn how to make a duct tape purse.
STEPS
METHOD 1 OF 4: STANDARD HANDBAG

1
BUY SEVERAL ROLLS OF DUCT TAPE. It now comes in a variety of colors (and patterns!) as well as the standard gray.
Duct tape has so many uses it's now available just about anywhere. Wal-Mart has a good selection and each roll runs at about $5.00 right now.
Feel free to choose as many colors or patterns as you desire. You could also place a different color on the inside.

2
CUT A PIECE OF CARDBOARD INTO FIVE PIECES. The five pieces will be the bottom, large sides and small sides of your duct tape purse.
The size of the purse is entirely up to you; just make sure the sides match up and fit with the bottom.

3
COVER EACH PIECE OF CARDBOARD IN DUCT TAPE. Cover it fully, making sure that it is all gray (or whichever color you've chosen) by the time you're done.
To cover a corner, run over it with duct tape and cut the tape so that you form a good, neat corner.

4
ASSEMBLE YOUR PURSE. Once you've covered all your pieces, put everything together by placing the pieces on the bottom of the purse and taping them on.

5
MAKE YOUR STRAP. To do this, take two pieces of tape and cut them to the length you want. Now place them together, leaving a little space.
This space, once folded over, will keep your strap from feeling sticky. Now just tape the strap to the bottom of the bag.
METHOD 2 OF 4: WITH FABRIC
1
CUT A PIECE OF FABRIC FOR THE INSIDE OF YOUR PURSE. Remember, your purse will be half this size.
Avoid fabrics that are too thin or sheer. Your tape needs something to cling to and shouldn't let the duct tape show on the inside.
2
TAPE YOUR FABRIC FACE DOWN ON A CLEAN SURFACE. This makes it secure when you're working with the tape.
Decide what kind of colors and patterns you want for your purse before you go any further. You are not limited to vertical or horizontal strips; make any pattern you want or cut up the tape into shapes.
3
COVER YOUR FABRIC WITH YOUR TAPE IN THE DESIRED PATTERN. The tape should cover all of the fabric and leave none exposed.
Go past the fabric an inch (2.5 cm) or so. Taping to the table or floor should not be an issue (use a clean surface!).
Overlap the tape as uniformly as possible.
4
CUT OFF THE EXCESS TAPE ALONG THE EDGE. Peel your piece off your surface and turn it over, fabric side up.
Turn over your purse. You should see a giant rectangle of duct tape.
5
TAPE UP BOTH SIDES OF YOUR PURSE. Don't tape up the top!
This serves as the seam and can be a completely different color or pattern of tape.
It's easier to lay the duct tape (the seam) sticky side up on the table and put the purse on top to meet it.
Trim the excess with scissors.
6
TUCK IN THE EDGES OF THE SEAM. This is the trickiest part.
Before you insert the seam into the bottom of the bag, fold it onto itself to make it un-sticky. _Then_ insert it; it should be much easier to manipulate.
The seam should be tucked into the fabric, disappearing.
7
TAPE THE INSIDES OF YOUR PURSE AND ALONG THE TOP EDGE. This gives it structure.
Tape along the bottom one strip of duct tape. This gives it a base.
Tape one strip along each side. This gives it a sturdy left and right.
Tape along the top to remove any rough edges.
8
COVER A PRE-MEASURED ROPE IN DUCT TAPE. This serves as your strap.
Make it a bit longer than you need; a bit will be used to be knotted or taped to the inside.
9
PLACE YOUR GROMMETS IN THE DESIRED POSITION. There should be simple directions on the package.
If you don't have grommets, you can stick to a plain duct tape strap. Duct tape is very sturdy and won't budge; however, grommets give your purse a more professional look.
10
INSERT THE STRAP INTO THE GROMMETS AND SECURE. Tada! Your duct tape purse is complete.
Tape the rope in place or tie in a knot to secure.
METHOD 3 OF 4: WOVEN
1
MAKE THE HORIZONTAL STRIPS. They should be
1
2 inches long and serve as your secondary color.
Use a ruler for an exact measurement.
Fold each strip in half LENGTHWISE. Try to be diligent in folding; the opposite side of the duct tape is a different color and will be seen.
Repeat this 23 times. That's right, 23. Use a different color on occasion if you see fit.
Put weights on them (books, stacks of paper, boxes) to flatten them out.
2
MAKE THE VERTICAL STRIPS. Measure out
2
5 inches (63.5 cm) of your _main_ color.
Fold each strip in half, just like you did with the horizontal strips. Do this 12 times.
Cover all straps with weights for around an hour to flatten completely. They'll be easier to work with.
3
CONSTRUCT THE SEAM. Rip off a piece of duct tape from your main color that's about 14 inches (
3
6 cm) long.
Fold it in half sticky side OUT and make a crease.
Line all 12 of the vertical strips along the crease. Get them up close and personal to each other.
Reverse the seam and fold along the crease, adhering the ends together.
Do this for both sides.
4
START WEAVING. Make sure each strip is snug in its place.
For weaving, go under, over, under, over for the first strip and then over, under, over under for the second. Repeat.
Throw in a different color here and there to mix it up.
5
COVER WHAT YOU\'VE DONE WITH YOUR HORIZONTAL STRIPS. This should go on the BACK of your purse. It acts as a liner.
Be as straight as possible--the strips will create lines.
Don't skip this part; the liner makes your bag much sturdier.
Continue weaving and constructing the lining as you go until you meet the far seam.
6
ADD A STRIP ALONG THE LONGEST EDGE. Leave half of the strip hanging, exposed.
Flip the entire piece over and fold the hanging edge over, taping it to the opposite side of the bag.
Repeat for both sides.
7
MAKE TWO STRIPS THE HEIGHT OF YOUR BAG. These will serve as the sides. They should be at least 4 inches (10 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) tall.
Fold your strip in half _sticky side out_. Lay on another strip sticky side up touching the upper, sticky edge of your first piece.
Unfold the bottom piece so that the two pieces are totally stuck together. Fold the top sticky part over the middle, so that there is only sticky on the bottom edge.
Flip it over and repeat.
If you're lost, we understand. Basically, halfway overlap the pieces of tape, flip it, halfway overlap them again and repeat until it is the size you want.
With the last one, fold it down so you have a sheet with no sticky band at the top or bottom.
8
TRIM DOWN THE EDGES. You want your sides to be a bit bigger at the bottom than at the top.
Like a triangle...but not quite. The two sides should come to a point if the piece were to go on.
9
TAPE THE SIDES TO THE INSIDE OF YOUR PIECE. Count 8 strips in for centering.
This will not be centered; one side is supposed to be longer than the other.
10
PLACE A STRIP ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE SIDE TO THE TOP EDGE OF THE PURSE. This will adhere the sides together.
Fold it in half sticky side out.
Connect the sides together. Repeat this three more times.
11
COVER ALL THE EDGES WITH A STRIP OF YOUR PRIMARY COLOR. This hides any pieces that wound up not completely straight.
One side should be longer than the other. It's a flap-top purse; the longer side serves as the cover.
Attach velcro to keep the purse from opening needlessly.
12
MAKE THE HANDLE. Cut three strips a bit longer than half the length you want the strap to be.
Lay one down, sticky side up. Cover half of it with another strip, sticky side down. Fold one half over the other.
Flip the piece and cover the now-exposed sticky edge half way with the third sticky piece.
Flip over again and fold the edge down so there are no exposed edges.
Tape the two pieces together and tape them to the inside of the bag.
METHOD 4 OF 4: AN INNER POCKET
1
CONSTRUCT A PIECE LIKE THE SIDE OF THE PURSE. It should be a bit smaller--around 6 inches.
Do not taper the edges like you did the side; it should stay in a rectangle shape.
2
ADD ANGLED BANDS TO EACH SIDE. This is the inner side of your pocket.
Add a sticky band to the bottom. Take a 6 inch piece and put it half on, half off the bottom of your little square. Trim it to an angle.
Cut with the sticky side of the tape up. It's easier to cut and leaves less residue on your scissors.
Flip over and fold these edges in half onto each other. What you end up with should resemble an envelope, sticky sides on the edges.
3
STICK IT ONTO THE INNER LINER. Place it as high or low as you please.
Secure the edges with extra duct tape. If you don't, the pocket will fall off eventually.

TIPS
Make sure each piece is completely covered in duct tape. If a piece is partially uncovered, it will spoil the look of your new purse.
Make sure your pieces fit together. When measuring your cardboard pieces, make sure the bottom of the purse is big enough to accommodate all of your sides.
You can make this purse a messenger bag by adjusting the sizes of all the pieces of cardboard.
Use scissors you don't love. After this project, they may be permanently sticky.
