How to Write and Pitch an Idea for a TV Show: 10 Steps

Competition is stiff in the television industry. Knowing how to write and pitch your original ideas or scripts will give you a huge leg-up.
STEPS
METHOD 1 OF 2: WRITE AN IDEA FOR A TV SHOW

1
RESEARCH CURRENT TELEVISED PROGRAMMING TO EDUCATE YOURSELF IN CURRENT TRENDS OR OPPORTUNITIES. Currently, docu-style reality series are very popular for most cable networks. A unique family, business, lifestyle, or profession can be filmed to create a compelling docu-style reality series for TV.

2
THOROUGHLY DEVELOP YOUR SHOW IDEA AND PUT IT INTO WRITTEN PAGES. A 1-to 3 page synopsis is fairly standard for reality-based concepts, whereas scripted projects should include a 3-to-10-page synopsis.
In the American television industry, the complete proposal for a TV show pitch is the "Treatment". This requires only a few components including a Title, Logline, Synopsis, and proposed cast if pitching a docu-style series or scripted series.

3
CREATE A CLEVER AND POWERFUL TITLE. Using known catch-phrases, or a "play on words" is the best approach to pull interest from readers and viewers.

4
WRITE A CATCHY LOGLINE. The logline is a one or two sentence description of your show designed to sell producers on the idea. It typically tells the main agenda of the show and/or main character. If your concept can’t easily translate to a logline, it might not be very marketable. It should tell us what we're watching, and what clever hook or premise there is in the show.
If you're pitching a documentary style series, having any short video on the subject or people involved can help Producers see the potential of the project. Keep any video down to 2 to 3 minutes with quick cuts.

5
IF YOU ARE WRITING A SCRIPTED TV SHOW, SUCH AS A DRAMA, LEARN HOW TO WRITE SCRIPTS. Script-writing classes can be taken at local community colleges.
If you are creating a reality television show, ensure that you are creating an executable format. In the case of reality competition shows, ensure that every aspect of game play is outlined. It is important to write what we are specifically watching unfold in brief, yet powerful points.
Specialized script-writing software can make quick work of a script. Movie Magic Screen Writer or Final Draft are popular picks.

6
REGISTER YOUR PROJECT WITH ANY COPYRIGHT SYSTEM SERVICE SUCH AS THE WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA. This will protect your intellectual property and give you time-stamped proof of creation. You may also wish to register your project online with The Creators Vault.
Both cost $20 per project. The WGA option will cost just $20 ($10 at the WGA site if you are already a WGA member).
The registered material is kept on file for five years, at which time you may renew. Terms may vary per service and site.
METHOD 2 OF 2: PITCH AN IDEA FOR A TV SHOW

1
ADD YOUR MATERIAL TO A SEARCHABLE ONLINE INDUSTRY DATABASE SUCH AS THE TV WRITERS VAULT OR OTHERS, USED BY MOST MAJOR PRODUCTION COMPANIES AND NETWORKS.
Accepting unsolicited submissions without a mediator puts companies at risk of being accused of stealing. Getting electronic proof of review by companies accessing your material is a protected online database is a unique benefit that the Internet provides in today's television development arena.

2
MAKE FRIENDS WITH SOMEONE IN THE BUSINESS. It isn't just "who you know", its "who knows your work". Share it with them, or propose collaboration. Consider getting 'fast-track' help (Google 'professional TV advisors' or similar). Professional TV advisors can pair you up with senior industry figures to make sure your project works for the TV business, before you burn any bridges. Most of them charge a time-based fee (like lawyers and other professional advisors) but they can shortcut years of empty 'door knocking' and can often get projects straight to the top, if they're good

3
CONSIDER GETTING A FOOT IN THE DOOR BY WORKING AS AN INTERN OR ASSISTANT.

4
CALL DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVES AT PRODUCTION COMPANIES TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AND PITCH YOUR IDEA. Again, this will only work if you already have connections in the industry.
